Abby has finally figured out her magic and after enduring an impromptu visit from her mother, Xander informs her that she must attend the Summit of the Magical Council at the Hotel Spectre. Before leaving for the Summit though, Abby creates some new creatures of her own and they just happen to be hat stealing gargoyles. Since she can't fly to the Summit with all her creatures, who she won't leave without, they all pile into cars and make their way to the Summit. Just the trip alone reminds me of when I was a kid and me and all my siblings would pile into the family station wagon to go for a long trip and by the time we got there, my parents were frazzled to no end. So you can just imagine how that goes. Then they make it to the Hotel and Abby doesn't seem to mesh well with all the stuck up, so-called purebred, magic hungry Summit goers. She also has to attend and testify in the trial of the one who tried to kill her in the previous book. With no outlet for her excess magic, she comes up with ingenious ideas on how to release it and help make her stay a little easier. The Council still wants to keep Abby under their thumbs for their own use but she has come to use her power to her own and her new guards/friend's advantage.In Gargoyles in the Round we get to meet more creature characters and how they interact with each other. Of course, Abby's own created creatures are into the mix as well and provide quite a bit of humor. She also gets to meet some important characters and learns a little more about her mentor/lover, Xander. Their relationship is moving forward and we get to see some more interactions between some of Abby's friends relationship woes as well. This really is a creative story that flows well and although there is a bit of mystery involved, the characters really do make the story into something unique.

Finally Abby is not only learning how to use and contain her talent, but she is also getting a handle on swimming. So, it is time to face the magic community, and the magic Summit is just around the corner. She only wishes it wasn't being combined with the trial of Miranda. But at least it makes for a great road trip to the United States to attend the event. It has to be a road trip as she is not going to put her gargoyles or gnomes in a cargo hold, just think of the havoc that they could wreak there.
What Abby is not prepared for is the mixed reaction she gets when meeting the magic community. Some are treating her as if she is royalty, but then there are a few that seem to be out to either imprison her--as past Nexus's were--or control her.
While Abby feels torn in many directions at the summit and trial, she does have Xander, her Oak Point Guard, and her creatures with her. So she forges ahead and you never known what might happen next with Abby.
Gargoyles in the Round is a fantastic follow up to Gnomes of Suburbia. I continue to enjoy my ventures into the mind of Ms. Grace and can hardly wait for what is next? Pixies, maybe? I find that this latest Nexus Chronicles only cemented my need to continue to follow Abby and her guard, not to mention her creatures. I thoroughly enjoyed the spunky banter and thoughts of Abby, and how her new perspective shakes up the stodgy world of magic, that she has entered into, albeit a little bit reluctantly at first. I loved Gargoyles in the Round and am waiting for the next installment. Is it out yet?

More comfortable with her magic, Abby faces one of the most difficult occurrences yet a visit from her mother to Oak Point Way. The visit goes surprisingly well, especially when her mother meets Xander, who charms her. After Abby's mom leaves, Xander tells Abby she has to attend the Summit of the Magical Council. As Nexus, she has to go and meet her public. More important, while at the Summit, she has to provide testimony against her attempted killer. Abby refuses to leave her critters behind, and so her gnomes, and her newer creations, three gargoyles, are convinced to behave if they want to go on the trip.
The Summit is basically a magical convention, where Abby must prove she has what it takes to be Nexus, but also that she is in control of the wild magic so the council doesn't lock her away like the last Nexus. Can Abby convince the council she is in control? Can she get the council to accept her more modern ideas for the magical community? And can she finally get some quality alone time with Xander?
In this second installment of the Nexus Chronicles, the action is more frenetic than in the first book. I love that Abby fought for the right of half magicals to be recognized, because the council has ignored these folk for too long. I love Abby for her loyalty and her passionate defense of her friends' right to be in love regardless of species.
The relationship between Abby and Xander is heating up quite nicely by now, although Abby wants more alone time with him, which is difficult with six gnomes and three gargoyles underfoot all the time.
There is more than one happy ever after in this one, and one is a very wonderful surprise. I recommend this as a wonderful escape from the daily routine, and as a way to bring the magic back to your life.
Fun, fast read. Very enjoyable.
I Read the whole series on My and loved it. I bought the paper back collection for my mother who loves a good SI FI Fantsy read but does not have a e-reader and is not intreasted in getting one. I hope to see more of Viola Grace's works in PB editions.
I have become a huge Viola Grace fan. Her books are smart, fun and thoroughly entertaining. You don't want the book to end. Her characters are strong with good core values. An amazing wonderful read.
